The completion of homework and revision is an excellent method for reinforcing learning, content and skills that students encounter in the classroom. St John Paul II College advises that students should spend the following time periods working on assessment, revision and reading:
Years 7 & 8
1-1.5 hours a day, 4 days a week
Years 9 & 10
1.5-2 hours a day, 4 days a week
Years 11 & 12
2-2.5 hours a day, 5 days a week (Students are allocated study lines, which we encourage them to use for completing tasks)
Assessment at St John Paul II College reinforces the learning process and drives successful lifelong learning for each individual. It involves students in the learning process where they self-assess, monitor their own progress and use timely feedback to reflect on learning.
Overall grades are assigned in line with the Australian Curriculum Achievement Standards for each subject area. Individual tasks have marks and weightings to help students know where to put their energies and efforts. Marks are penalised for lateness, because meeting deadlines is a lifelong skill, particularly as we prepare students for the workplace.
Parents can access their student's Assessment Calendar, via Canvas.
Reporting at JPC occurs both formally and informally.
A goal-setting meeting is held at the beginning of the year, with the Student, Families and Pastoral Teacher present.
Formative assessment is an opportunity for students to reflect on their learning and identify areas where they may need support. Formative assessment takes place in the classroom, with feedback provided to students.
Through Canvas, Students and Parents can access student results regarding summative assessment tasks.
Formal Semester Reports are sent at the end of Semesters 1 and 2. These give information on the progress students have made in each of their academic subjects.
Three-way interviews also known as Teacher interviews occur at the end of Terms 1 and 3, enabling parents to speak directly to subject teachers and gauge how their student is progressing.
